Globally, obesity is reaching epidemic proportions, stress is on the increase, and Chronic Diseases of Lifestyle (stroke, heart disease, diabetes, cancers) are claiming more and more victims.
Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) and Employee Wellness Programmes (EWP) are one of the most sustainable ways for organisations to reach affected communities and minimize the cost to company of employee absenteeism and employee turn-over. Simultaneously they provide an opportunity to implement best practices as caring and committed employers and institute a culture of health, wellness and motivation.
Studies in the United States of America report that for every $ 1.00 spent on Employee Assistance Programmes, between $ 6.00 to $ 10.00 is saved by the company. Levels of sickness fall by between 25 % and 50%.
While sick leave costs the British economy around £13 billion per annum with 10 sick leave days clocked up per year, Grant Thornton report that South Africa lost up to R 12 billion in 2005 to absenteeism, with nearly 20% directly attributable to HIV / Aids related illnesses.
According to the South African Medical Council's report on Chronic Diseases of Lifestyle (CDLs) for the period 1995 to 2005, among the 10 leading causes of death in South Africa are largely preventable diseases including Ischaemic Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes, Diet- and Tobacco-induced Cancers, and topping the list, is HIV / Aids. They share similar risk factors which include high blood pressure, high blood cholestrol, diabetes and obesity which develop from controllable behaviours such as smoking, physical inactivity, inappropriate diet, and psychological stress. Over 81% of South Africans present with at least one of these risk factors. And 25% of deaths are from CDLs.
The scary bit is that all of this is within our own control!
